Each NZALT Regional Officer takes responsibility for a portfolio

Human Resources

James Donaldson, RO Taranaki, Wanganui, Hawke's Bay, Horowhenua, Manawatu

Annual NZALT student competition
  • prepare information to go to Polyglot/ROs/SLAs
  • arrange for selection of winners, e.g. at mid-year Executive meeting
  • send results to Polyglot editor, back to schools

Monitor Excellence Certificates

Prepare Executive Meeting Notes for ROs and SLAs

Oversee other projects (e.g. bumper stickers, posters)

Professional Development

David Hall, RO Waikato / Bay of Plenty / Rotorua

Manage PD award process
  • receive and acknowledge applications by due date
  • collect references and relevant background information for applications
  • present PD award applications to March Exec meeting for decisions
  • inform applicants of outcomes
  • monitor disbursements
  • forward reports from PD recipients to Polyglot/NZ Language Teacher
  • promote PD awards through approved channels
  • monitor and maintain rules and procedures for application

Monitor LangSems
  • keep on record information about LangSems
  • keep records of suitable keynote speakers, presenters
  • liaise with Conference portfolio holder
  • perceive trends, needs, issues and feed back to Conference/LangSem convenors

Write press releases

Receive feedback from members nationwide & pass on to C & A portfolio holder

Conference

Philippa Doig, RO Wellington / Wairarapa / Nelson / Marlborough

  • Maintain up-to-date records in hard copy/electronic format
  • Liaise with Conference Convenor/Manager
  • Facilitate liaison between key persons
  • Obtain reports/photos for publication
  • Pass evaluations on to PD POrtfolio holder
  • Scan the Gazette for notices seeking applications for conference funding and inform the President and Secretary
  • Receive 3 copies of the previous convenor's report and forward one each to the President and the new Conference Convenor
  • Hold and pass on a Task Checklist for the Conference Convenor as soon as that person is appointed
  • Receive Conference Committee minutes, report to NZALT Executive on the planning progress and report any Exec. responses to the convenor

Research

Jo Rittey, RO Canterbury / Nelson / West Coast

  • identify issues of importance to language teachers
  • ascertain feasibility and cost of research
  • consult with Executive before initiating research
  • conduct research in collaboration with other strategic partners
  • report research findings to Executive and language teachers
  • summarise current research and liaise with webmaster for website

Years 7 & 8

 

  • Identify PD awards and opportunities for Yrs 7 & 8 teachers
  • Maintain and monitor certificates for pupils
  • Maintain links with Regional Facilitators and support their work
  • Gather and analyse information
  • Identify initiatives to encourage the learning of 2LL at Yrs 7 & 8
  • Work with ROs to encourage initiatives in the regions for primary and secondary liaison

Planning, Policy & Public Relations

President, Senior Vice-President, Secretary

  • Represent NZALT in forums, meetings
  • Read, gather information, identify research & prepare submissions
  • Identify (member) opinion and ways to respond
  • Speak in public / write for publication
  • Build effective links with MOE, NZQA, ERO, ILANZ, SLA etc
  • keeping in touch with SLAS by requesting newsletters/issues for Exec meeting
  • Maintain strong liaison with the Curriculum Facilitator : Languages in MOE
  • Liaise with key agencies and build quality relationships (e.g. PPTA, NZEI)
  • Maintain and build international liaison
  • Issue press releases
  • Monitor agreed projects
  • Seek sponsorship for NZALT Biennial Conference

Curriculum and Assessment

Doug Anderson, RO Auckland & Northland

  •  Identify key issues - keep an eye on TKI and the Educational Gazette
  •  Gather and analyse information
  •  Liaise with MOE and NZQA about NCEA external and internal assessments
  •  Liaise with SLA's on concerns relating to Curriculum and Assessment
  •  Assist with submissions

Marketing and Publicity

Jenness Riethmaier, RO Otago, Southland, Westland

  Polyglot & NZLT
  • Liaise with editors re content, format
  • Seek advertisers and sponsors
  • Seek articles, reports (ROs, NZALT reps, SLAs, National Advisers)
  • Monitor book reviews (including facilitating process between supplier, reviewer,Polyglot editor and treasurer)
  • Monitor job descriptions and keep contracts for positions up to date
  • Gather information on student competitions, ILW for publication

  Advertising
  • Seek sponsorships, donations for Polyglot & NZLT
  • Produce and distribute advertising letter and payment schedule
  • Receive and forward advertisements, itemise payments

  Publicity Material
  • Monitor publicity material

Website

Manage NZALT website
  •  maintain and update material on website
  •  post new material to website from Exec members and stakeholders as appropriate
  •  monitor other websites relevant to language teaching

Manage NZALT Clubdata database
  •  receive new membership applications, update database and forward membership information to new members
  •  respond to queries from members re membership, database and subscriptions
  •  provide information to Executive members where required
