Awards for Members

NZALT is proud to offer two awards for teachers of languages.

Nominations for the NZALT awards are called for annually with nominations closing end of February. Nominations should follow the relevant criteria for the award.

Excellence in Teaching Languages Award


This recognises the work of a member in the field of languages teaching in either the primary, secondary or tertiary sector. The Excellence in Teaching Languages Award consists of a citation and a taonga and is open to all members of NZALT. Nominees must have been a member for at least five years. The recipients will be announced and presented at an appropriate NZALT event (conference or LangSem).

Nomination and selection criteria for Excellence in Teaching Award

  • Written statement from each person making the nomination; a copy of the nominee’s CV and may also include letters of support.
  • Nominees must be have been a member of NZALT for at least five years.
  • An award committee comprised of the President of NZALT and two other members of the NZALT Executive will consider the nominations and decide on recipients of the awards.

Life Membership Award


This is designed to provide recognition for significant contribution over time to NZALT.

Excerpt from Working Rules

Nomination and election of Life Members
The NZALT may award a Life Membership of the Association to any member or past member who is considered to have made an especially valuable contribution to the work of NZALT and who satisfies one of the following criteria:
  1. They are a retired member of NZALT who was a founding member.
  2. They are a member who has served for at least fifteen years.
  3. They are a member who has given outstanding service to the Association.
Any three members of the Association may nominate a member or past member for consideration for a Life Membership, that is, there must be one nominator and two seconders. Details of the reasons for nomination, which should be attached to the official nomination form, should be received by the Secretary before the first Executive meeting of a calendar year. The nomination will be considered by a sub-committee, consisting of three past members of Executive and the President, who will make recommendations to the full Executive.
If the Executive approves the award of Life Membership to the person nominated, it shall recommend such an award at the next Annual General Meeting. The Life Membership shall be ratified by a majority vote of members attending the Annual Business Meeting.

Judging criteria

  • The award for life membership will be judged on the nominee’s contribution to NZALT over time, and the level and nature of that contribution.
  • The Excellence in Teaching of Languages award will recognise the work that is deemed by peers to be noteworthy in the field of languages learning and teaching.
  • The judges have the right not to make an award, and their decision is final.
