Events this year include:

15 February - Certificates of Excellence due

28 February - Deadline for "Win you membership back" for 2012 and applications for Excellence in Teaching award and Pete and Eunice Beveridge Award.

31 March - 2012 Membership due

5 April - Conference early bird fee due.

1 - 4 July - NZALT Biennial Conference in Rotorua.

Lobby to maintain our Regional Language Advisors

School Support Services (Regional Language Advisors) to cease from 2012

Professional learning and development support that has been provided through School Support Services (your Regional Learning Languages advisor) will cease to exist on 30 December 2011.

Please inform colleagues of this drastic change. This will affect your budgets, your access to PD, courses provided, in-school support, online resourcing, support for LangSem and Conference, information dissemination, support for NCEA alignment, cluster meetings and workshops. Urgent action needs to happen.

As a teacher, department or cluster we urge you to do the following:

Write to MPs and other interested groups.

If you would like guidelines on what to write click on our Proforma Letter (doc) and make sure that you read Protocols for Writing to MPs (pdf)

You can modify the letter and write as a constituant to the following:


Awards for Members : Excellence in Teaching Languages, Leadership in Languages& Membership Award

NZALT makes available two awards for members : Excellence in Teaching Languages Award , The Peter and Eunice Beveridge Award for Outstanding Leadership in Languages and Life Membership Award.

NZALT holds an annual Conference every second year and LangSems(Language Seminars) in each region every other year.

Conference years are even numbered years and LangSems are odd numbered years.

Language Perfect World Championships First500 Promotion

9 -16 September 2011

Students represented their class, school and country in the largest languages event in history!

Participating schools should have received their certificates by now if they contacted Language Perfect as requested.

NZALT Certificate of Excellence

Rationale

To recognise exceptional achievement in a field of second language learning, NZALT will provide certificates, suitably endorsed, for NZALT members to award to their students.

Guidelines

1. Applications for the certificate are to be directed to the local Regional Officer. The deadline for applications to be 15 February 2012.

2. Certificates are for students in Years 11 to 13.

3. These certificates are intended to recognise the achievement of second-language learners only.

4. The student's teacher must be a current member of NZALT.

5. Applications are to be completed on the spreadsheet provided (only available in Term One each year) and must state:
     a.  candidate's name (correctly spelt)
     b.  language learned and citation;
     c.  school attended;
     d.  name(s) of teacher(s) making application;
     e.  name of school principal;
     f.  NZALT region of the school.

6. Eligibility : a student is eligible to receive a Certificate of Excellence if s/he has gained, in a language in any one year, at least:
at NCEA Level 1

14 or more credits at Excellence level, and at least 3 credits at Excellence from externally and 3 credits at Excellence from internally assessed standards.

(The same requirements as NZQA's Course Endorsement at Excellence level)
or    

at NCEA Level 2 / Level 3

three Excellences
or    

Cambridge International Examinations

A or A*

 
To apply for Certificates of Excellence for your students, click here     to download a spreadsheet.

Please rename the file with your school name and e-mail it to your Regional Officer by the 15 February. We then send the details to the printers for the certificates to be printed and delivered before the start of Term 2.
