In an attempt to make our website more user-friendly, we have set up a 'Frequently Asked Questions' page, which you can access from the 'About NZALT' page. You can find answers to many of the questions that members commonly ask. This should be your first port of call if you have a query.

If you have an important question which you think should be added, please get in touch with us.

Have you forgotten your login details?
5 February 2009

Recently I have received numerous requests for login details (member number and/or password). Please note your membership number is on your invoice. When your data was originally put into the online database, your password was set to your first name, as registered with us, including a capital first letter (passwords are always case-sensitive). If you have not changed it, then it will still be the same.

Further information about accessing the database is on the membership page and in Frequently Asked Questions.

Membership update
1 February 2009

Invoices for 2009 have been sent today by email to members. If you have not received an invoice, it is likely we have an incorrect or expired email address for you. Please check the NZALT database and contact the webmaster.

Again we are offering the chance to have your subscription refunded. Pay before the end of February and you will go into the draw to be one of six lucky members to receive a refund of their 2009 subscription.

There are three major changes to subscriptions and payments :

  1. Teachers in training and first-year language teachers now have free membership to NZALT. Please pass this on to any first-year teachers at your school.

  2. Schools with more than four language teachers can now register all their language teachers as members of NZALT for the cost of four members. Consult the membership page of the website for further information.

  3. NZALT is now GST registered. Subscription rates have been adjusted to include GST. Institutions will therefore be able to claim a GST refund. If your institution is making payment on your behalf, please ensure you pass on the invoice which carries our GST number.

Alignment of NCEA standards within the New Zealand Curriculum (update)
20 January 2009

It has been decided to extend the consultation on the initial draft matrices until 13th February. Many of you have already taken advantage of this opportunity and the project managers thank you for your input to date. Please remember this is your FIRST opportunity to give the writing team feedback.

You will have further opportunities to respond to this work (draft standards, conditions of assessment and the like) in the coming months. The project managers empathise with the current situation which asks you to view the draft matrices through a lens which is not yet in focus (i.e. The new New Zealand Curriculum 2007). Please remember that the new Achievement Objectives for all languages emphasise communication and the importance to make meaning. There is now a true acknowledgement of the real communication that takes place in the classroom. We all look forward to seeing the refined curriculum guidelines (to replace language specific documents that exist now) that will further increase our understanding of the curriculum in practice in the classroom. In the meantime this STANDARDS-CURRICULUM ALIGNMENT project will continue to make changes to the existing unit and achievement standards based on the matrix which you have seen (taking into account your feedback).

All the best for the beginning of the school year. Even though there is an extended timeline for implementation (2011 for Level 1/2012 for Level 2/2013 for Level 3), we are urged to complete this work soon so that there is adequate time for trialling and preparation. We will keep you up-to-date on developments.

Yours in languages
Adele Scott and Gunhild Litwin, Joint Project Managers
