Founding member's passing on 15 December 2010 It is with great sadness that we learnt of Noel Watt’s passing this week. Noel was a founding member of NZALT, a past secretary, executive member and president. He provided long and active service and leadership to NZALT and was awarded a LIfe Membership to acknowledge this in 1999. NZALT will make an appropriate tribute to Noel in the 2011 edition of NZ Language Teacher.

Gunhild Litwin is setting up a panel of Support Material Writers from 17-19 January in Palmerston North, to prepare and/or critique materials for the implementation of portfolio-based gathering of evidence of student achievement.
This will be an exciting collegial and professional exercise to be part of.
The 2011 PPTA Conference will be held at the Wellington Convention Centre from 18-20 April 2011. The three key themes for the conference are leadership, engagement and professional activism.

This is a call for papers and announcment of the Australian Federation of Modern Language Teachers' Biennial Conference to be held in Darwin (Australia) in July 2011. Click here for further details.

TPDL assists existing and new teachers of languages improve their
language and culture knowledge and apply pedagogy that has a real
and positive impact on student learning.
Teachers can gain internationally recognised language qualifications
as well as accreditation in language teaching.
TPDL is a year-long programme funded by the Ministry of Education.
More than one teacher per school may apply.
Up to 60 places are available for teachers of Chinese, French,
German, Japanese and Spanish and up to 20 places for teachers of
Cook Islands Maori, Niuean, Samoan, Tongan and Tokelauan.
Native speakers of the language they are teaching may learn another
language.

As part of our membership incentive scheme, six lucky members have been drawn from those who had paid their 2010 sub before 1 March. The following members will receive a refund of their subs for this year :

NZALT makes available Certificates of Excellence for members to issue to their students for high levels of success in NCEA exams. The deadline for applying for Certificates of Excellence is 1 April (end of term 1).
