The Association for Language Testing and Assessment of Australia and New Zealand (ALTAANZ) invites you to submit an abstract for the inaugural ALTAANZ Conference to be held at The University of Sydney, Australia between 8 and 10 November 2012. The purpose of ALTAANZ is to promote best practice in language assessment in educational and professional settings locally (Australia and New Zealand) and internationally, and to foster collaboration between academia, schools and other agencies responsible for language testing and assessment. Its goals include the stimulation of professional growth and best practice through workshops and conferences, and to promote research in language testing and assessment through conferences.
Plenary speakers include:
- Professor Carol Chapelle, Iowa State University, USA: “The innovation-technology connection in language assessment”
- Other plenary speakers will be announced very soon
The theme of the 2012 ALTAANZ Conference is “Innovative Language Assessment: Challenges and Complexity”. This theme will incorporate aspects of the current international language assessment landscape such as:
- Classroom-based language assessment
- The role of standardized testing and its impact on L2 teaching and learning
- The use of gate-keeping English language tests for international students
- The assessment of indigenous languages
- Issues of language testing and citizenship
We would also like to invite symposium proposals that address one of the following topics.

Methodologies and Technologies Course to promote oral communication in Language Education
This international course is run by the Universities of Utrecht and Valencia, in cooperation with TELLConsult and the Utrecht Summer School. It is a 5-day course in which (student) language teachers can explore the educational possibilities of a number Web 2.0 applications to support the development of L2 speaking and intercultural skills.
Participants will be trained in developing, supervising and assessing learning activities that can be realised with the selected applications, possibly in collaboration with international colleagues.
In 2012 the course will be run twice: in Utrecht, The Netherlands in early July (week 27) and in Valencia, Spain, the second week of October (week 42)

Teacher Professional Development Languages Years 7-10 Awards
TPDL assists existing and new teachers of languages improve their language and culture knowledge and apply pedagogy that has a real and positive impact on student learning.
Teachers can gain internationally recognised language qualifications
as well as accreditation in language teaching.
TPDL is a year-long programme funded by the Ministry of Education.
More than one teacher per school may apply.
Up to 60 places are available for teachers of Chinese, French,
German, Japanese and Spanish and up to 20 places for teachers of
Cook Islands Maori, Niuean, Samoan, Tongan and Tokelauan.
Native speakers of the language they are teaching may learn another
language.

Ministry of Education - Language Immersion Opportunities
There is a new section on the Ministry's website about Language Immersion opportunities that are currently available for teacher and students.

provide information about the awards and advice for teachers during the application process and when preparing to depart
form part of the support framework to ensure that language teachers and their students are able to maximise the benefits accruing from these experiences both during and after the awards.

Sasakawa Fellowship for Japanese Language Education
This is a programme to encourage Japanese language education and Japanese studies in New Zealand. The Sasakawa Fellowship offers opportunities for students and teachers.

NZQA Moderation Best Practice Workshops
Moderation Best practice workshops are delivered by NZQA secondary moderators for teachers (in a particular subject area) to improve understanding of national standards through the use of student exemplars. These workshops will:
Clarify your understanding of grade boundaries of internally assessed standards
Work with supplied assessment materials including samples of student work
Engage in professional discussion
The emphasis will be on the new level 1 Achievement Standards. Current level 2 and 3 standards will also be covered and some time will be available for unpacking the criteria of the new level 2 standards.
The Ministry is funding the workshops this year. The workshop dates are set throughout the year and are run if a certain number of people attend.
